Théobar’s opening hours + @ddress

Our blog is one week old now, and we haven’t even told you Théobar’s opening hours: shame on us!

Well you can go there from monday to friday, between 8.00 am and 10.00 pm…Tiphaine and I suggest you’d go there around 7.45 am before it opens: the sun’s not up yet, the sky is pink (it’s soooo nice) and Marie can’t help moving around to make sure everything looks perfect before her first customers arrive.

Two days ago, we advised Marie to create Théobar’s own email address, and we even did it for her, so if you happen to have any suggestion to make, questions to ask… send them at  theobar17@yahoo.fr .

On our next post, we’ll visit Théobar at the early-and so beautiful- time of day that we’ve just told you about. See you soon!

Photos exhibition at Théobar

As promised, here is some more information about the oncoming photos exhibition, entitled “La marche du prince”, from November 27th till December 15th. Marie and Théobar’s staff will welcome some students who set off on a great adventure: 4500 km through Sri Lanka, India up to the Tibetain frontier both walking and cycling. They’ll tell us why their interest in Bouddha pushed them to leave France…

So take notice of the dates, we hope we’ll see you there…

A Thursday evening at Théobar with Ecclectic Trio

A nice thursday evening with Joelle (singing+ guitar), Daniel (accordeon) and Francis (double bass) listening to Edith Piaf and Charles Aznavour’s songs… We arrived twenty minutes after they started, and since Théobar is small, there were no seats left! Fortunatelly, Marie showed up and politely asked the other customers to make some room for the four of us on the couch.

The band played their own compositions too; besides, they launched a CD last year, with only a few songs it’s true, but enough of them to make us love their universe. Last thursday, Marie even sold some of them for the price of 8€ only; if you’re interested but you don’t know where you can find it, well keep visiting our blog because we’re likely to be the first ones to know when and where Ecclectic Trio will next perform. But for those who are in a hurry to discover the band’s composition, ask us at karine_weyh@yahoo.fr : we’re the lucky ones who had the privilege to get one for free!

On our next post, we’ll tell you about the photos exhibition that will take place in Théobar as soon as November 27th, so try to be there! And again many thanks for visiting our blog.

Théobar’s various events

This blog comes a bit late to promote the coming of Ecclectic Trio, tomorrow evening from 7.00 p.m to 10.00 p.m, but still you’re invited to visit Marie at Théobar to have a drink and share a plate of tapas while listening to Ecclectic Trio‘s jazzy music…

…since you all have understood that the taking place of such events is another Théobar’s brillant idea! Apart from giggs, other entertaining events make Théobar a unique place to go to : photos exhibitions, talks about various topics, projections of documentary films etc… Besides, from November 15th, there’ll be a photos exhibition, but we’ll tell you more about it next time when we have further information. In our next post, we’ll also tell you about Ecclectic Trio’s performance: we hope we’ll have some good time tomorrow evening, and we’re looking forward to it!

Théobar and its cozy atmosphere

Once you step inside Théobar, you don’t really know what country you’ve entered: its influences are very diverse, at least that’s what Marie’s stereo sings us every day. She’s keen on music that originates from South America, Africa or Asia: in other words, non-commercialized music.

On Théobar’s walls, Marie has hung up postcards of landscapes she saw for real during her past travelling life. And for once in your no-smoker life, well you may wish you were a smoker, since Théobar’s smoking area is a beautiful place with red couches, nice marble coffee tables and “oriental style” lamps. In the middle of the room, there’s an artificial tree with little pretty things hanging to its leaves and that she may have taken from her daughter’s playhouse… But this is what makes the place so charming, so why not?

If you fancy reading some quality novel, Mary has some books in her free-access library: some of them are 100 years old and when you open them, their smell plus their yellow pages take you back to the 19th century. And speaking of quality writing, Marie also writes a quote, everyday, onto her small blackboard hanging above the counter: “Have you noticed the progress that ignorance ‘s been making?” was yesterday’s quote by Tristan Bernard.

Théobar: an “ethical” coffee shop

Looking for a nice little spot to chill out with your friends after an endless 3-hour-microeconomics class? No problem,  Amerigo Vespucci has the answer…at least Amerigo Vespucci AVENUE has: it’s Théobar, a 1-year-old coffe shop, owned by Marie  and her lifepartner, David ( the creator of the concept), who both wanted to create an original and cozy place.

dscn0965.JPG dscn0961.JPG dscn0964.JPG

What makes this place so special is its”ethical” aspect: “We believe in human economic development”says Marie for whom the words ‘trade’ and ‘humanity’ are not antinomic. Marie and David used to travel a lot when younger and their nomadism is undoubtedly what’s been inspiring them so much, especially Marie who’s been to Africa many times. Hence the choice of fair-trade products such as coffees and fruitjuices.

You may think that such choices have consequences on the prices, but Marie assures us that it doesn’t: “The quality and the choice of our products don’t make it impossible for us to offer reasonable prices”. Indeed, the cup of nicaraguayan coffee from fair-trade will cost you 1.5€ , the price of a coffee you drink in a bar of La Rochelle’s Old Harbour…so now the choice is yours…
